Ultra-low-power MEMS accelerometers for healthcare and industrial applications

Analog Devices, Inc. has released a three-axis MEMS accelerometer that delivers twice the power consumption of the ADXL367 accelerometer while improving noise performance by more than 30% compared to the previous generation device (ADXL362). The new accelerometers also provide extended field time, maximize battery life, and reduce maintenance frequency and costs. It is used in many healthcare and industrial applications, including vital signs monitoring, hearing aids, and motion-supported measurement devices.

Unlike accelerometers that utilize power duty cycles to achieve low power consumption, this device does not alias the input signal by undersampling, but instead samples the full bandwidth of the sensor at all data rates. And when the output data rate is 100Hz and the action-triggered wake-up mode is 180nA, it consumes only 0.88 µA.

It includes external control of the sample time and/or an external clock. Rich digital functions, such as single- and double-point, free fall, and activity detection, reduce the computational demands on the host microprocessor, further increasing system power consumption.

It also features a deep multimode output FIFO, built-in micropower temperature sensor, internal ADC for synchronous conversion of additional analog inputs, single/dual tap detection and a state machine to prevent false triggering. It operates from a supply voltage as small as 1.1V, allowing the use of a single-cell battery without an external boost converter
