Electronic devices are becoming more and more compact, and components are becoming denser, and with it, the likelihood of malfunctions affecting circuit operation due to ion migration increases. In response, Murata has developed a hydrophobic monolithic ceramic capacitor through the use of innovative surface treatment technology. When a voltage is applied between the capacitors, ion migration may occur if moisture is present between the electrodes. This may cause the anode metal to ionize and become the cathode. Then, when electrons are obtained as the cathode, the metal may undergo electrochemical phenomena of deposition and growth, which may eventually lead to a short circuit. This is especially likely to happen when the capacitor gets wet due to condensation. To solve this problem, Murata has developed a waterproof monolithic ceramic capacitor that has been treated with a thin film to allow water to form dispersed droplets rather than larger droplets. The size of these droplets is suppressed insufficiently to cover the gap between the external electrodes, thereby preventing ion migration. The capacitor is particularly suitable for navigation systems, body control electronic control units (ECUs), air conditioning ECUs, instrument ECUs, and engine ECUs. The sample capacitors have already begun shipping and are planned for mass production within one year. the company.
