Stmicroelectronics VL53L7CX Time-of-flight (ToF) sensor is designed for applications requiring an ultra-wide field of view, providing a 90° diagonal field of view (FoV). Based on ST's FlightSense technology, the VL53L7CX incorporates an efficient metasurface lens [Diffraction Optical Element (DOE)] placed on the laser emitter to project a 60°x 60° square field of view onto the scene. Its multi-zone functionality provides a matrix of 8 x 8 zones (64 zones) and can operate at high speeds (60 Hz) of up to 350 cm.

Autonomous mode with programmable range thresholds combined with an ultra-wide field of view makes the VL53L7CX suitable for any application requiring low-power user detection. ST's patented algorithm and innovative module structure allow the VL53L7CX to detect multiple targets within FoV in each region with deep understanding. The ST histogram algorithm ensures coverage of glass crosstalk immunity over 60 cm.

Derived from VL53L5CX, the pins and drivers of the two sensors are compatible, ensuring easy migration from one sensor to the other. Like all ToF sensors based on ST's FlightSense technology, the VL53L7CX records absolute distance in each area, regardless of target color and reflectance.

Packaged in a miniature reflux-capable package integrated with a SPAD array, the VL53L7CX achieves excellent ranging performance in a variety of ambient lighting conditions and in a wide range of covered glass materials. All of ST's ToF sensors integrate a VCSEL that emits completely invisible 940 nm infrared light and is completely eye safe (Class 1 certified).

The VL53L7CX is the perfect sensor for any application that requires an ultra-wide field of view, such as robotics, smart speakers, video projectors and content management. The combination of multi-area functionality and a 90° field of view can enhance new use cases such as gesture recognition, SLAM for robots, and low-power system activation for smart buildings.
